St. Louis- Spring is just around the corner, which means that one inevitable chore looms on every homeowner's to-do list: yard work. Working on the yard can be strenuous and time-consuming. In fact, in addition to routine mowing, the average American homeowner spends almost 2.5 more hours a week on yard work beyond routine mowing, according to a study conducted by Eastern Illinois University.

 

To help homeowners spend more time enjoying their lawns instead of tending to them, Spectrum Brands, a leading supplier of lawn and garden care products, is introducing two new products specifically designed to accomplish two tasks at once.

 

Seven out of every 10 consumers who seed medium and small lawn patches are applying the seed by hand, which leads to inconsistent coverage. Enter the new SmartSeederT, a first of its kind, handheld broadcast spreader that comes already pre-filled with grass seed. The reusable SmartSeeder package includes premium grass seed that can be used to fill in bare and thinning spots or seed an entire lawn, covering 900 to 1,800 square feet per container.

 

The easy and accurate SmartSeeder can be purchased with a variety of premium seed mixes, including Tall Fescue and Sun & Shade, that are heat-, drought- and insect-resistant. The dual delivery options allow consumers to use the unique spinner bottom to broadcast seed for large areas or the shaker cap for small patches.

 

The second 2-in-1 product breakthrough from Spectrum is Premium Mulch with Weed Stop®. As homeowners work around the yard in the Spring, one tedious chore is weeding, prepping and mulching flower beds and planter boxes. To ease this tiresome chore, Premium Mulch with Weed Stop pulls double-duty for gardeners and homeowners. In addition to adding beauty to landscaping, it is the first and only mulch to contain a pre-emergent herbicide, controlling weeds for up to four months with a single application. Gardeners simply can spread it and forget it. 

 

Premium Mulch with Weed Stop is made of natural forest products, contains no recycled waste wood, and is certified by The Mulch and Soil Council as a premium mulch.

 

SmartSeeder and Premium Mulch with Weed Stop will be available nationally in March 2006 at leading mass retailers and home and garden centers.  Both products will be sold under the brand names SchultzT, Vigoro® (at Home Depot), and Sta-Green® (at Lowe's). SmartSeeder also will be sold as Expert Gardener® Perfect Seed® (at Wal-Mart).
