Double dig for best results:
-
Double digging is a proven method for creating great soil for your landscape bed, whether you are creating an annual & perennial flowerbed, vegetable garden, a shrub border, or foundation planting. It results in deeper, richer soils, and raised beds that drain more efficiently and warm sooner in northern climates.
-
Define the area you plan to dig. If ground is dry and hard, soak the soil at least 24 hrs before digging
-
Dig a trench one-foot wide and one-foot deep down entire length of bed and place soil in wheelbarrow or on tarp
-
In same trench add a 2-3" layer of Schultz® Garden Soil, then dig again, loosening the second layer of native soil working in with Schultz® Garden Soil
-
Move over one shovel's width in the bed, and begin to dig out another trench. Turn native soil from this trench over into first trench, working in another 1-2" of Schultz® Garden Soil.
-
Repeat these steps with each new trench.
-
After digging and amending the last trench, refill with the soil from wheelbarrow or tarp, amending with 1-2" of Schultz® Garden Soil
-
The finished bed will be a raised mound approx. 6" above the original surface, & will have excellent qualities of drainage, aeration and structure for easy root penetration.
